1986 BMW 325es

The E30 was the replacement for the earliest 3-series platform (E21 1975-1983) and was produced from 1982-1994 depending on your country; In the US we saw the E30 arrive in 1984. There were a number of models within the E30 line-up, some sportier than others; 318i/is, 325e/es, 325i and the AWD model 325ix.

Donnie's 325es is a workhorse; a car that sees daily use in warmer seasons and occasionally track time. It's used to haul the family around and spirited drives around the twin ports here in northern Minnesota.

The car is powered by the M20B27, which is a 2.7L inline 6 cylinder, with plenty of low end grunt but runs out of steam pretty quick. With a few choice modifications this engine does wake up significantly but still lags behind the venerable 2.5L M20B25 engine that came in the 325i. In spite of this "shortcoming" the E30 in Dad Mod's lineup sees a great deal of spirited driving because that is really where the E30 shines.

This particular car runs a LSD in the rear end and 4 wheel disc brakes along with a 5spd manual. In the mid-80s these features were significantly ahead of the competition. The E30 chassis uses a full independent suspension front and back, which makes for a very well planted and stable car in the turns.

The Year of the E30 Series

The E30 series has been a long time in the making while we built up a plan for the build, but the journey to that decision kicked off with a LONG road trip to a racetrack in Topeka, Kansas!
